History of the Grand Forks Housing Authority

Our Forty-Year, Faith-Based Partnership - A Federal Program Based on Local Values
  • In 1967, Grand Forks took advantage of a federal
rental assistance program and established the
    Grand Forks Hou
Grand Forks Housing Authoritysing Authority (GFHA).

  • Wishing to avoid the stigma of public housing -
and the loss of tax base - the Housing Authority
helped 8 local churches collaborate to build housing

  • for our most vulnerable citizens.

  • Creating a faith-based, non-profit organization,
Grand Forks Homes, Inc. the churches contracted
with the Housing Authority to manage and
    administer those properties.

  • For the last 4 decades, this partnership has provided
a forum for all segments of the community to come
together in a highly successful, nationally recognized,
    non-partisan effort.

A Decade of Flood Recovery

  • After years of service, this partnership was uniquely positioned to help the city in its time of crisis.

  • We knew how to administer federal programs and connect with Washington D.C.

  • We know how to build housing - a useful skill after the loss of over 800 homes.

  • We took a leadership role in helping the community come together - a risky position that did not always win us friends, but that was essential to the city's successful recovery.

Moving Beyond Rental Assistance - Emergence of Client Services

  • We are working with children to guarantee their safety and early school success.

  • We work with older students to assure academic achievement and preparation for their future independence.

  • We work to help families move beyond assistance to full participation in mainstream society.

  • We work with adults to empower them as employees and to achieve the dream of homeownership.

  • We work with seniors and others in our community to make sure that they live full, healthy, independent lives.

  • We work with the whole community to make sure that Grand Forks' unique values and high-quality of life are preserved and enhanced - for the enjoyment of today's citizens, and for future generations.
